Why Public Finance?

As the CEO of PFM, I often reflect on the journey that led me to the field of public finance. Fresh out of college, I was drawn to this field because of its intersection of public policy, economics and politics. But what I found immediately rewarding was the profound impact on communities and the chance to drive meaningful change. From day one as an analyst at PFM, I worked on projects that funded public infrastructure. Watching new schools open and roads get built because of our efforts was incredibly rewarding. Public finance is about more than numbers; it is about fostering economic growth and ensuring that public resources are used efficiently and effectively. In public finance, your work directly benefits communities. You will see the positive impacts of your efforts, whether you are facilitating the financing of a new public park or improving transportation systems.

As governments and public institutions evolve, the need for skilled financial professionals remains strong. The field offers a wide range of roles, from budgeting and financial planning to debt and derivative municipal advisory services.

To those considering a career in public finance, I encourage you to take the leap. This field needs innovative thinkers and dedicated professionals who are passionate about making an impact in their community.

At PFM, we value the contributions of every team member and are committed to nurturing new talent. For over 35 years, we’ve cultivated a culture of collaboration and innovation, providing training to more than fifty analyst cohorts—individuals, like me, who were eager to embark on a rewarding career in public finance.
